Not by might
Then he answered and spoke to me, saying, “This is the LORD’s word to Zerubbabel, saying, ‘Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD of Armies.
Zechariah 4:6 · WEBLarge assignments tempt us to measure the future by the resources presently in our hands. Zerubbabel faced the work of rebuilding with more opposition than strength. God redirected his confidence from human force to the activity of the Spirit, the only source sufficient for the task.
We often respond to large assignments by increasing pressure on ourselves. Planning and diligence matter, but they cannot replace dependence. When effort becomes the source of our confidence, weariness and fear soon become our companions.
Dependence on the Spirit is active. We pray, listen, plan and work, but we remain responsive when He redirects us. We refuse to manipulate outcomes or carry responsibility for what only God can produce.
Consider the work that currently feels larger than you. Instead of asking only how you can try harder, ask how the Spirit is leading. He provides a strategy, a partner, a pause or courage for the next step. The assignment is significant, but you were never asked to become its source. His Spirit is sufficient.
God’s work in my life is accomplished by His Spirit. I serve diligently without making my strength the source, and I remain responsive to His direction.
Father, forgive me for carrying Your work as though everything depends on me. Holy Spirit, direct my planning, effort and timing. Show me the next step and the support You have provided. I release the outcome to You and receive strength to serve faithfully. Let Your power be evident in what obedience produces through my life.
Amen.
